New Hillsborough Workforce Training and Placement Program to Help Residents Fill High-Demand Jobs

TAMPA, FL – The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners approved an agreement and funding for the new Targeted Industry Sector Workforce Training and Placement Program on Dec. 8, 2021, with CareerSource Tampa Bay.

The new program will help Hillsborough County residents increase their employability by providing resources, tools, and support services to overcome barriers to employment and successfully transition from unemployment or underemployment into a sustainable jobs with local employers.

Some of the major Targeted Industry Sector Workforce Training and Placement Program initiatives include:

• Coordinate the Hillsborough County Career Pathways Alliance partnership consisting of employers, industry associations, partner agencies, apprenticeship programs, educational instructions, and staffing companies.

• Develop meaningful, paid work-based learning experiences.

• Work with employers and educational partners to develop career pathways for highdemand jobs that will outline a training curriculum, needed skills, and easily understandable career ladders.

• Work with Hillsborough County Public Schools and Hillsborough Community College to align their occupational skills certifications, training curriculum, and desired outcomes with industry standards for high-demand jobs.

• Create targeted career exploration activities and outreach efforts to increase awareness and encourage careers in high-demand, middle- to high-skill jobs.

The targeted industry program expands and enhances the successful Manufacturing Alliance partnership started in 2014 between Hillsborough County, CareerSource Tampa Bay, Hillsborough Community College, Hillsborough County Public Schools, manufacturers, and regional manufacturing associations to address an industry “skills gap”, a mismatch between what employers need in terms of worker skills and the skills offered by the available workforce.
