Hillsborough County High School Students Map Their Career Futures with CareerSource Tampa Bay

MyJourney Career Success Workshops equip students to become college and career ready.

Tampa, FL – In partnership with Hillsborough County Government, CareerSource Tampa Bay has guided approximately 1,300 students from 25 Hillsborough County high schools through MyJourney Career Success Workshops, a program designed to help students confidently plan and navigate their careers journeys.

Now in its second full year, MyJourney Career Success Workshops are two-day sessions offered through the AVID program in Hillsborough County high schools. The program helps students distinguish between career planning and their journey, providing tools and resources to navigate the potential challenges along their chosen paths.

“Whether students pursue college, technical training, military service or enter the workforce after graduation, MyJourney Career Success Workshops equip them with the knowledge and skills to make informed career decisions,” shared Conchita Canty Jones, Director of Student Engagement, CSTB. “Students gain valuable insight about living wages, educational requirements, and overcoming career obstacles – essential knowledge for their future success.”

Originally launched as a CareerSource Tampa Bay pilot program a few years ago, MyJourney Career Success Workshops are now in their second full school year in Hillsborough County.  Student feedback highlights the program’s impact:

·        99% of students surveyed reported learning something valuable

·        98% said they would recommend the workshop to their peers

·        Students rated Career Exploration as their favorite topic, followed by Career Planning, Job Readiness, and Career Journeys.

“Preparing young people for meaningful careers is a vital part of workforce development,” said Dr. Byron Clayton, Senior Vice President and Chief of Sector Partnerships, CSTB. “These workshops educate students on how to achieve a livable wage, upwardly mobile career that aligns with their desired lifestyle, understanding educational pathways and navigating the bumps along the way.”

In addition to its integration into 25 Hillsborough County Public Schools through the High School AVID programs, MyJourney Career Success Workshops are offered to public charter schools in Hillsborough County and within Department of Juvenile Justice residential facilities.
